Talking Therapy

As an art therapist I am often asked if art making has to be part of the therapy. Simply the answer is no.

I also provide talking therapy which is often referred to as psychotherapy, counselling, or simply “therapy,”. This is a process in which individuals engage in structured conversations to explore their thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and experiences. Talking therapy offers a safe, confidential, and supportive environment for personal growth and emotional restoration. I do enjoy working creatively with people and this can also be a part of talking therapy. Thinking creatively can involve journaling, researching and activities to help with self-reflection.

How does Talking Therapy work?

The process of talking therapy typically begins with an assessment, during which the therapist and client discuss the issues at hand, set goals for the therapy, and determine the most suitable therapeutic approach.

During sessions, the therapist listens attentively, asks questions, and provides feedback or observations. The client is encouraged to express thoughts and emotions openly, without fear of judgement. Over time, this collaborative process can lead to increased self-awareness, acceptance, and the development of healthier coping mechanisms.

The Therapeutic Relationship

Central to all forms of talking therapy is the quality of the relationship between therapist and client. Research consistently shows that a strong, trusting, and respectful therapeutic alliance is one of the best predictors of positive outcomes in therapy.

Confidentiality and Boundaries

Confidentiality is a cornerstone of any therapy. You can feel reassured that what you share will not be disclosed to others without consent, except in rare cases when there is a risk of harm to themselves or others. Boundaries regarding time, space, and the nature of the professional relationship are also clearly defined, ensuring safety and respect for both parties.
